Geography
Country:Spain
Coordinates: 28.1° North, 15.5° West (view map)
Paleocoordinates:28.1° North, 15.5° West
Basis of coordinate:estimated from map
Geographic resolution:outcrop
Time
Period:Quaternary Epoch:Pleistocene
Stage:Chibanian 10 m.y. bin:Cenozoic 6
Key time interval:Middle Pleistocene
Age range of interval:0.77400 - 0.12900 m.y. ago
Age estimate:.421 ± .02 to .151 ± .011 Ma (K-Ar)
Stratigraphy
Stratigraphic resolution:bed
Stratigraphy comments: The lavas have been dated by the conventional K/Ar dating method on whole rock at 0.5 Ma (0.548 and 0.529 U 0.02) and 0.3 Ma (0.297 and 0.326 U 0.03), respectively (Lietz and Schmincke, 1975). Because conventional K/Ar dating on whole rock may give erroneous older apparent ages (Guillou et al., 1998), new unspiked K/Ar datings of groundmass were carried out on the same lavas. These new determinations give ages of 0.421 +- 0.020 Ma for the tephrite and 0.151 +- 0.011 Ma for the Hauyne phonolite.
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: lithified conglomerate
Secondary lithology: lithified sandstone
Lithology description: coastal conglomerates and sandstones interbedded with the tephritic lava flows
Environment:coastal indet.
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:body
Size of fossils:macrofossils
Collection methods and comments
Collection excludes:some genera
Collection methods:field collection
Reason for describing collection:biostratigraphic analysis
Taxonomic list comments:List is only certain molluscs: "species that do not present a climatically significant ecology (cosmopolitan species, species with a geographic biodistribution in both the north and south Atlantic, rare endemic Canarian species) are not mentioned in this work."
