Geological group:Clinton Formation:Rockway
Stratigraphic resolution:formation
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: lithified dolomite
Secondary lithology:gray,green lithified "shale"
Includes fossils?Y
Lithology description: In western New York and Ontario the basal Rockway Formation consists of argillaceous dolostone and gray, dolomitic shale, with a sparse, poorly preserved Costistricklandia fauna. The Rockway Formation changes facies in west-central New York to greenish-gray shale and dolostone previously assigned to undifferentiated lower Irondequoit, and still farther east to the sandy Dawes Dolostone.
Environment:offshore ramp Tectonic setting:foreland basin
Glacial or sequence phase:transgressive systems tract
Geology comments: This assemblage represents offshore, well oxygenated mud bottom conditions.
2003:04:06 Environmenta/sequence calls by SEP based on Brett's work on NY Silurian and the regional stratigraphic context of the Irondequoit (correlative).
