Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | gray lithified argillaceous, carbonaceous mudstone |
Lithology description: The Gevar'a m Formation occurs in the lower part of the Cretaceous sequences that was studied. It unconformably overlies limestone beds considered to be of Jurassic age (Derin, 1966). In the Gevar'am 2 well the formation consists of 942 meters of dark gray, carbonaceous, marine shales with occasional thin sandstone beds. To the east there is a rapid facies change and in the Helez area most of the marine shales grade laterally into shallow water arenaceous sediments (Shenhav, 1970), which are referred to as the Helez Formation. Correlation between the less argillaceous sediments of the Helez Formation and the shales of the Gevar'am Formation has not, as yet, been established paleontologically. In the Gevar'am 2 well, at 1500 m the Gevar'am Fm. is overlain by 700 meters of light to medium gray marine mudstone called the Talme Yafe Formation. The nature of the contact between these two formations is still an open question. The rapid vertical change from a carbonaceous shale to a light gray marlstone sequence may represent an unconformable relationship or only a rapid change in the depositional environment. | |
