Stratigraphy comments: LITHOSRATIGRAPHY: From the Gatun Formation, for which lithostratigraphic relationships are not discussed. AGE: Late Miocene in text, earliest Tortonian on composite stratigraphic columns (e.g. Hendy 2013). STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From lower part of the Gatun Fm. |
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | bioturbation, fine poorly lithified silty sandstone |
Includes fossils? | Y |
Lithology description: LITHOLOGY: Soft, silty fine-grained sandstone. LITHIFICATION: Poorly lithified, on the basis of observed specimens. | |
Environment: | shoreface |
Geology comments: Lithology is fine (typically silty) and often contains whole shells, but there is also shell hash that is sometimes packed into burrows, suggesting some wave energy. All faunal evidence suggests shallow conditions, less than 30-50 m, for most of the Gatun Formation. The area around Sabanita contains the shallowest-water faunas according to Hendy (2013), consistent with water depths <10 m. |
