Stratigraphy comments: Ayala Sst thought to be about same age as Vargas Pena Shale, which is thought to be latest middle Llandovery, Monograptus convolutus Zone. Harrington (1972) had interpreted the VP Shale as early Llandovery.

Benedetto et al. (2013) redate this as Hirnantian.

Lithology description: "The fossils occur in slabs of micaceous, red-weathering, very shelly, argillaceous sandstone, with bedding thicknesses in the decimetric range, that crop out in situ at ground level...Horizontal, parallel bedding is the only sedimentary structure observed in the poorly exposed Sst."
Environment:marine indet.
