Stratigraphy
Stratigraphic resolution:group of beds
Stratigraphy comments: 6-8 m below the top. Equivalent to unit 4 of the main Punta Lazzi section. Said to be late Pliocene (but before reassignment of Gelasian to the Pleistocene). Gaetani & Sacca identify foraminifera of zone MPL 4 at 3-3.5 m above the base, which would be mid-Pliocene. However, they also identify planktonic foraminifera of that zone at the Punta Mazza section, which is dated as Gelasian (upper MPL 5 and 6) to Calabrian in more recent papers. According to Borghi et al., this unit belongs to MPL 5 and 6.
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology:yellow lithified marl
Lithology description: Lithified based on outcrop photo in Borghi et al. (2014).
