Stratigraphy
Stratigraphy comments: "This unit occurs in beds of Ashgillian age lying above the Ashgillian-age graptolite Zone of Diplograptus bohemicus, present in the underlying Wufeng Formation." I infer that the position above the Wufeng but within the Ashgill implies Hirnantian age. |
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | calcareous mudstone |
Includes fossils? | Y |
Lithology description: "shells...occur as fairly closely packed individuals lying on single bedding planes rather than in shell beds. most of the shells are disarticulated and breakage is minimal. Most of the convex shells lie with the convex side up. the associated rock is a very calcareous mudstone." | |
Environment: | marine indet. |
Geology comments: See lithology. "The paleogeographic and stratigraphic positions led Rong to conclude that this comm. occurs seaward of both the Aphanomena-Hirnantia and the A.-H.-Dalmanitina communities. The higher diversity...is consistent with normal, not too turbulent marine environment. However, overall character of community consistent with BA 3 rather than 4 or 5." |
