Stratigraphy
Formation: | Purlawaugh
Stratigraphic resolution: | group of beds
Stratigraphy comments: Hind and Helby (1969), cited by White (1981), gave age as 'Early to Middle Jurassic', but implied that age was more probably J1, since the flora occurs 'close to the base of the unit' (of the Purlawaugh Beds)
JA: Woodward (1895) gives the age as "upper Jurassic... not earlier than the Upper Lias, and may be referable to the Lower Oolites" based on the fauna; see comments on other Talbragar collections for current age assignment; thickness of the "bed" is "about ten feet" |
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | planar lamination, ferruginous lithified "shale" |
Lithology description: "laminated, hard, siliceous shales, cherty in places, rendered ochreous by ferruginous infiltrations, and traversed by joints" also said to be a "hard ferruginous flagstone"
Environment: | lacustrine indet. |
