Stratigraphy
Local bed:E
Local order:bottom to top
Regional section:Neuwied Basin
Stratigraphy comments: Level E is in the middle of the Karlich sequence (site goes to level Jb). Dated to earliest Middle Pleistocene (overlies the Brunhes/Matuyama boundary). Early Cromerian (zones 1-2), Late Biharian, similar to West Runton upper freshwater bed, Sussenborn, etc.
Lithology and environment
Lithology description: loess.
Environment:loess
Taphonomy
Size of fossils:mesofossils
Collection methods and comments
Reason for describing collection:biostratigraphic analysis
Collection method comments: There are two different mollusc assembalges in level E, the majority are characteristic of loess deposits and indicate cold glacial conditions, but a few samples from the base indicate more humid conditions - these are Lymnaea sp., Planorbis planorbis, Gyraulus laevis and Valvata pulchella.
Taxonomic list comments:Contains reworked fragments of interglacial mollusca such as Aegopinella cf. minor, Ruthenica filograna, Cepaea nemoralis and Ena montana.
