Paleocoordinates:25.6° North, 94.3° West
Basis of coordinate:based on nearby landmark
Geographic resolution:outcrop
Time
Period:Neogene Epoch:Miocene
10 m.y. bin:Cenozoic 5
Key time interval:Early/Lower Miocene
Age range of interval:23.03000 - 15.98000 m.y. ago
Stratigraphy
Formation:Guajalote
Stratigraphic resolution:bed
Stratigraphy comments: The Guajalote Formation is early Miocene age and can be correlated with the Tuxpam (or Tuxpan) Formations of southern Mexico, and have also been called San Rafael and San Fernandao Formation (Dumble's nomenclature). The Guajalote Formation has similar faunal composition to the Chipola and Shoal River formations of the Alum Bluff Group, Flordia. Field relations indicate that the fossiliferous beds of the Guajalote Formation lie some 2,500 feet above those of the upper Oligocene.
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology:shelly/skeletal lithified sandstone
Includes fossils?Y
Lithology description: No specific lithologic description other than "fossiliferous sandstone".
Environment:coastal indet.
Glacial or sequence phase:regressive
Geology comments: Siliciclastic. No paleoenvironmental data reported. The lower Miocene was an interval of regression in the Gulf of Mexico.
