Stratigraphy
Formation: | Flechado | ||||
Stratigraphy comments: Age estimate of authors is early Desmoinesian based on brachiopods and fusulinids of previous studies. Talpa section, but no beds mentioned. |
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | fine poorly lithified "shale" |
Secondary lithology: | "cross stratification" lithified sandstone |
Includes fossils? | Y |
Lithology description: The Flechado outcrop south of Talpa is predominantly a sequence of steeply dipping, dark gray, fossiliferous marine shale and siltstone units interbedded with thinner beds of conglomeratic to medium-grained, locally cross-bedded, tan to gray sandstones, some bearing plant remains. The lower part of the sequence exposed here, in which fine-grained dark clastics containing abundant fossils predominate (total thickness about three times the cumulative thickness of interbedded sandstones), is about 60 m thick. Above this interval sandstone units become thicker and more numerous, eventually excluding the fossiliferous shale/siltstone beds, and culminating in thick, cliff forming, corss-bedded, channel sand and delta-front bodies. JA: fossiliferous facies originally entered as lithified and "silciclastic" but repeatedly referred to as shale by the authors and certainly not well-lithified based on ease of screenwashing the material
Environment: | delta front |
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation: | body |

Collection methods and comments
Collection methods: | bulk,selective quarrying,surface (in situ),sieve,field collection
Minimum sieve size: | 0.425 | Maximum sieve size: | 2.000 |
Collection size: | 14157 specimens
Reason for describing collection: | taxonomic analysis
Museum repositories: | NMMNH,UNM
Collection method comments: The collection methods were not standardized with some collections made by wet sieving for microgastropods while other horizons were only sampled by surface collecting. The number of specimes are the numbers reported to have been examined for taxonomic purposes. The ecological significance of the number os specimens is unclear.
Taxonomic list comments:411 juvenile specimens were repored as belonging to the Family Soleniscinae, but not genus identification was made. |
