Stratigraphy
Formation:Grand Bay
Local section:Grand Bay
Stratigraphic resolution:bed
Stratigraphy comments: The principal, nominal sedimentary units of the mid-Tertiary succession of Carriacou are the Belmont Formation (lower Miocene), Kendeace Formation (lower Miocene), Carriacou Formation (middle Miocene) and Grand Bay Formation (middle Miocene). The collection originates from sandy facies of the Grand Bay Fm. Jung (1971) assigns this a Middle Miocene age based on faunal affinities with other circum-Caribbean units.
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: poorly lithified sandstone
Includes fossils?Y
Lithology description: Sandstone facies. From specimens presented in photgraphic plates most material from Carriacou appears to be from poorly-lithified as opposed to cemented, or unconsolidated sediments. No information provided in text
Environment:offshore
Geology comments: Most collections of the Grand Bay Fm may have lived in inner shelf depths of 20-50 m, although some may be deeper, or at least have had shallow-water fauna transported offshore.
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:body

Preservation of anatomical detail:good
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods:field collection, survey of museum collection
Reason for describing collection:taxonomic analysis
Museum repositories:NMB
Collection method comments: Naturhistorisches Museum, Basel, Switzerland.
Taxonomic list comments:Exhaustive for Mollusca. Later publications may list non-molluscan taxa from these units. These are not available at this time.
