Stratigraphy
Geological group: | Alum Bluff | Formation: | Jackson Bluff
Stratigraphic resolution: | group of beds
Stratigraphy comments: Lower upper Miocene bed. Ecphora Zone of Choctawhatchee Formation, Alum Bluff Group. The Ecphora zone, from which the collection is derived, is typically exposed in the upper fossiliferous bed unconformably overlying the Chipola Formation at Alum Bluff, Apachicola River. The bed ranges in thickness from 15-25 ft at different places along the bluff. Late Miocene age based on recent lithostratigraphy. Local section name = Holland, Basinal/regional section name = Leon. Placed in Jackson Bluff Fm (and hence Late Pliocene) by enterer. |
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | shelly/skeletal,blue unlithified sandy claystone |
Includes fossils? | Y |
Lithology description: The sediments comprising the Ecphora Zone consist of very fossiliferous, sandy clay, which is bluish where unweathered. Lithification data not reported, but all figured specimens appear to be free of matrix so an unlithified classification is assigned.
Environment: | coastal indet. |
Geology comments: No reported geologic or paleoenvironmental data. Probably shallow water siliciclastic depositional environment. |
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation: | body |
Size of fossils: | macrofossils |
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods: | field collection |
Reason for describing collection: | taxonomic analysis |
Museum repositories: | USNM |
Collection method comments: Specimens are lodged in USNM collections. Collected by G.C. Matson (1908)
Taxonomic list comments:Probably exhaustive for Mollusca. Certainly good nomenclatural treatment. |
