Stratigraphy
Formation: | Gatun | ||||
Stratigraphic resolution: | bed
Stratigraphy comments: STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: The Gatun Fm rests unconformably on formations of different ages in different parts of the Panama Canal Basin. To the east of Colon, the Gatun Fm rests nonconformably on unamed Cretaceous volcanics. To the west of Colon, including several islands in Lake Gatun, the Gatun Fm rests with angular unconformity on the upper Oligocene Caimito Fm. BIOSTRATIGRAPHY: From unknown member of Gatun Fm, but most of the Gatun is Late Miocene (12.0-7.9 MY) according to Collins et al. (1999). |
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | unlithified not reported |
Includes fossils? | Y |
Lithology description: GENERAL LITHOLOGY: As member is unknown, lithification fields are left blank. LITHIFICATION: lithification data not reported, but assumed to be unlithified based on observation of specimens in Woodring (1957-1982).
Environment: | coastal indet. |
Geology comments: ENVIRONMENT: from Collins et al. (1999), open, inner neritic. |
