Stratigraphy
Formation:Herschell Limestone Member:Bagdad
Stratigraphic resolution:bed
Stratigraphy comments: LITHOSTRATIGRAPHY: The Herschell Limestone of Playford (1977) is subdivided here (Playford, 1988) into two members: the lower Vincent Member and the upper Bagdad Member. STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: Overlying the Vincent Member of the Herschell Limestone, which further overlies and abuts the Tamala Limestone, and is overlain by superficial Holocene deposits. THICKNESS: Thickness at type section is 0.6 metres. AGE: Dated as being around 2,200 to 3,100 years old. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: Fossils from throught the unit (informally divided into four lithologic units, all containing macrofossils).
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology:medium,shelly/skeletal poorly lithified sandy,calcareous "mixed carbonate-siliciclastic"
Secondary lithology:coarse, very coarse,shelly/skeletal poorly lithified calcareous sandstone
Includes fossils?Y
Includes fossils?Y
Lithology description: SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Weakly lithified medium-coarse grained coquinite and interbedded weakly lithified coarse-to very coarse grained calcarenite. LITHIFICATION: Poorly lithified as text states the unit is "weakly lithified".
Environment:foreshore
Geology comments: ENVIRONMENT: Above wave base, probably in a beach deposit in the upper intertidal zone.
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:body,original aragonite,original calcite
Size of fossils:macrofossils
Abundance in sediment:abundant
Articulated whole bodies:none
Disassociated major elements:all
Temporal resolution:time-averaged
Spatial resolution:parautochthonous
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods:field collection, survey of museum collection, observed (not collected)
Reason for describing collection:taxonomic analysis
Collection method comments: COLLECTOR: Collection a composite of taxa listed from various publications and personal comments by G.W. Kendrick. REPOSITORY: No repository stated, though presumably reference material exists at the Western Australian Museum (WAM).
Taxonomic list comments:COMPLETENESS: Not exhaustive, only limited to common and characteristic taxa. 99 species are recorded from this unit. NOMENCLATURE: Not an authoritative publication, and many names lack species-level assignments.
