Stratigraphy
Stratigraphic resolution: | bed
Stratigraphy comments: "The maximum thickness of Zone III is 15 inches"; underlying Zone II is dated at 10,000 +/- 175 B.P. and overlying Zone IV is dated at 6750 +/- 150 B.P. (considered "inconsistent" with other dates and therefore "probably the result of contamination") and 9300 +/- 160 B.P. (radiocarbon on "snail and mussel shell"); age unclear, but presumably early Holocene based on lack of Pleistocene megafauna |
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | red sandstone |
Lithology description: "a red-orange lens of water-deposited sand" with a "lack of internal stratifaction, it is presumed to have been deposited at one time"
Environment: | cave |
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation: | body,anthropogenic |
Size of fossils: | macrofossils |
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods: | bulk,selective quarrying,sieve,field collection
Minimum sieve size: | 6.350
Reason for describing collection: | archaeological analysis
Collectors: | H. L. Alexander, Jr. | Collection dates: | 1950, 1960 |
Collection method comments: "All work was done by trowel, and fill was transferred by bucket to the screen... All material was passed through 1/4 inch screen, and much of it also was run through fine window screen."
Taxonomic list comments:identifications are by E. L. Lundelius, Jr.; MNI counts are given, but are of unclear value given probable disassociation of the remains |
