Stratigraphy
Formation:Blinovo
Stratigraphy comments: The Kamysh-Burun quarries were excavated in Kimmerian (= Zanclean) iron ore deposits underlain by Pontian (= Messinian) or late Sarmatian s.l. (= Tortonian) deposits. Remains of marine mammals, which are frequent in Kimmerian deposits, are probably reworked from the underlying late Sarmatian strata
(Chersonian Formation) (Andrusov 1929). An example is the holotype of Cetotherium rathkii from the Taman Peninsula taken from iron ore deposits but also bearing Chersonomactra caspia on its surface (PG pers. obs. 2010).
