Stratigraphy
Geological group:Taebaek Formation:Maggol
Local section:Sanaegol (SN) Local bed:741
Local order:bottom to top
Stratigraphic resolution:bed
Stratigraphy comments: Bed 741 is in the uppermost part of the Maggol Fm., about 2 m below base of Jigunsan Fm. (Yun, 1999 fig. 2). The Maggol Formation is a subunit of the Taebaek Group and its uppermost part is Llanvirnian in age (see Kwon, 2005, Geosci. J. 9(4)).
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology:shelly/skeletal "limestone"
Includes fossils?Y
Lithology description: "Lithologic components of the formation consist of bioturbated limestone, well bedded limestone and bioclastic limestone with frequent intercalations of dolomite and dolomitic limestone. Flat pebble conglomerates are included in the lower part of the formation, but they were not observed in the section examined." (Yun, 1999). The lithology of bed 741 is "bioclastic limestone" according to stratigraphic log in fig. 2 in Yun (1999).
Environment:shallow subtidal indet. Tectonic setting:cratonic basin
Geology comments: "Based on sedimentary structures such as desiccation cracks, ripple marks, bird's-eye structures, and bioturbation, Paik (1985, 1987, 1988) suggested tidal flats as the depositional environments of the Maggol Formation." (Yun, 1999). According to Woo (1999, Geosci. J. 3(3)) bioclastic limestones represent the subtidal facies within the peritidal shallowing-upward cycles of the Maggol Fm.
