Stratigraphy
Formation:Saman
Stratigraphic resolution:formation
Stratigraphy comments: LITHOSTRATIGRAPHY: From the Saman Fm, which regionally overlies the Restin Fm of the Parinas Gp (Middle Eocene). AGE: Late Eocene (p. 9), on the basis of molluscan biostratigraphy. Foraminifera suggest an upper Eocene age. Olsson states that the Talara and Saman rocks can be referred to the Upper Eocene and in terms of the European section, to the Bartonian and Ludian.....respectively? STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From unknown position within formation.
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology:fine poorly lithified argillaceous sandstone
Secondary lithology: poorly lithified conglomerate
Includes fossils?Y
Includes fossils?Y
Lithology description: Sandstone and conglomerates, becoming more argillaceous and fine-grained towards the top. Judged to be at best poorly lithified from figured specimens. All specimens have matrix remaining in apertures, suggesting some lithification, but none remain unsegregated from hand specimens or slabs of rock, suggesting that they are somewhat unlithified.
Environment:coastal indet.
Geology comments: Appears to be shelfal siliciclastic environment judging from faunal composition.
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:body
Size of fossils:macrofossils
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods:selective quarrying,field collection
Reason for describing collection:taxonomic analysis
Collection method comments: No museum repositories are reported, but material my presumably be the AMNH of PRI collections. Because of uncertaintly this field is left ommited.
Taxonomic list comments:Exhaustive for Mollusca.
