When: Chilcatay Formation, Burdigalian (20.4 - 16.0 Ma)

Environment/lithology: estuary or bay; sandstone and conglomerate

• semi-enclosed, shallow-marine bay, structured along a latitudinal depth gradient, and sheltered seawards by a longshore chain of crystalline basement islands
• massive sandstones and conglomerates with boulder-sized clasts at the bottom (Ct1c facies association), followed by medium-to fine-grained sandstones alternating with conglomerate beds (Ct1a), and clinobedded coarse-grained calcirudites at the top (Ct1b) (Di Celma et al., 2018b, 2019).
