La Fouquelière, Ancenis Basin (Ordovician of France)

Where: France (47.4° N, 1.3° W: paleocoordinates 67.0° S, 78.3° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Pierre Melière Formation, Darriwilian (467.3 - 458.4 Ma)

• "Pierre Melière Formation, middle Darriwilian, Middle Ordovician"

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; fine-grained, concretionary, micaceous siltstone and micaceous sandstone

• "At la Fouquelière (Mouzeil, Loire atlantique), the concretion-bearing fine micaceous siltstones and sandstones of the Pierre Melière Formation yielded a rare, low diversity invertebrate fauna dominated by a trilobite assemblage typical of the atheloptic biofacies (Cavet and Pillet, 1961, 1963, 1967, 1968; Chauvel and Nion, 1977;Henry, 1980, 1989; Vannier, 1986b; Pillet, 1992; Henry et al., 1997;Lefebvre et al., 2010). The occurrence of this atheloptic trilobite assemblage (sensu Fortey and Owens, 1987), along with the presence of the mitrate Lagynocystis both suggest relatively deep (outershelf, slope), dysoxic environmental conditions."

Size class: macrofossils
