Tongoy area, Coquimbo Formation, Unit 15 (Pleistocene of Chile)

Where: Chile (30.3° S, 71.5° W: paleocoordinates 30.4° S, 71.2° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Coquimbo Formation, Calabrian (1.8 - 0.8 Ma)

• Unit 15 was Sr dated at 1.4 Ma

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: shoreface; lithified conglomerate and lithified, calcareous conglomerate

• The coquina are interpreted as nearshore (upper shoreface) deposits because of their high fossil content. In the Tongoy paleobay, this facies represents shelly shoals and channels, but more distant from the river mouth than Units 8, 10 and 13.
