When: Hatsuse Formation, Late/Upper Miocene (11.6 - 5.3 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Hatsuse Fm, which overlies the Misaki Fm and is overlain by the Miyata Fm. THICKNESS: From bed within formation which reaches 460 m in thickness. AGE: Late Miocene on the basis of molluscan biostratigraphy. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From unknown position within formation.

Environment/lithology: coastal; lithified, tuffaceous, conglomeratic sandstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Shallow water, possibly between intertidal and 50 m, or deeper. TEMPERATURE: Warm-water.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Pyroclastic, conglomeratic sandstone. LITHIFICATION: Lithified, on the basis of figured specimens.
