Vogelkop, W. 55, Klasaman Formation, New Guinea (Pliocene of Indonesia)

Where: New Guinea, Indonesia (0.9° S, 131.3° E: paleocoordinates 3.5° S, 131.9° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Jef Lio Member (Klasaman Formation), Pliocene (5.3 - 2.6 Ma)

• the thickness of this member is 50 m, the level from which the fossils were collected is approx. 10 m from the base (an inference made from the strat column)

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marginal marine; fine-grained, argillaceous, calcareous sandstone and carbonaceous conglomerate

• Fine-grained sediments which were laid down in a peri-orogenic belt in gradually shallower water (though no more than 50 m deep, finally) was formed under shallow marine (neritic to littoral) conditions.
• The formation consists in the main of slightly sandy to sandy clays, marly in the lower part, with frequent intercalations of clayey and calcareous sands and, in the upper more sandy part, intercalated conglomerates and coal seams denoting paralic conditions.

Size classes: macrofossils, microfossils

Collection methods: collected by J. B. Wooley in 1929/1930
