Manning Canyon (Carboniferous of the United States)

Where: Utah (40.3° N, 112.1° W: paleocoordinates 2.8° S, 47.1° W)

When: Manning Canyon Shale Formation, Mississippian (358.9 - 323.2 Ma)

• This assemblage could be earliest Pennsylvanian - but I suspect it is in the Early Carboniferous (A.Raymond)

Environment/lithology: terrestrial; black, brown, gray, red, calcareous shale

• The shales are black, grey, brown, and red, weathering to black, purple, brown, and yellow. They are fissile, calcareous, and platy in many localities. (p. 7)

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: mold/impression, adpression, permineralized, original carbon, replaced with hematite, replaced with limonite

Collection methods: Tidwell and students have been revisiting this group of localities for years. Taxonomic list is a general list for two major localities. These locs also have invertebrates associated with them.
