Where: Utah (40.3° N, 112.1° W: paleocoordinates 2.8° S, 47.1° W)
• coordinate based on nearby landmark
• outcrop-level geographic resolution
When: Manning Canyon Shale Formation, Mississippian (358.9 - 323.2 Ma)
• This assemblage could be earliest Pennsylvanian - but I suspect it is in the Early Carboniferous (A.Raymond)
Environment/lithology: terrestrial; black, brown, gray, red, calcareous shale
Size class: macrofossils
Preservation: mold/impression, adpression, permineralized, original carbon, replaced with hematite, replaced with limonite
Collection methods: Tidwell and students have been revisiting this group of localities for years. Taxonomic list is a general list for two major localities. These locs also have invertebrates associated with them.
Primary reference: W. D. Tidwell. 1967. Flora of Manning Canyon Shale, Part I: A lowermost Pennsylvanian flora from the Manning Canyon Shale, Utah, and its stratigraphic significance. Brigham Young University Geological Studies 14:3-66 [H. Sims/S. Ostrowski/J. Cassara]more details
Purpose of describing collection: general faunal/floral analysis
