KY1, Minokerazawa, Kamiyasse (Permian of Japan)

Where: Japan (39.0° N, 141.5° E: paleocoordinates 17.8° N, 108.1° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Sakamotozawa Formation, Sakmarian (293.5 - 290.1 Ma)

• About 31 m above the base of the Sakamotozawa Formation.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified, fine-grained, shelly/skeletal, calcareous sandstone

• The sandstone is calcareous and fine- to medium-grained, but becomes coarse-grained in some parts. It contains several layers, which yield a number of granular (sometimes fine pebbly) calcareous debris such as brachiopods, bryozoans, crinoids, and fusulines. They are usually weathered and dissolved, showing porous occurrence on the surface. Sand grains are mainly of volcaniclastic, lithic, and calcareous fragments and subangular quartz particles.

Size class: microfossils

Preservation: mold/impression

Collected by T. Shintani

Collection methods: peel or thin section

• Repository: Department of Geology, Faculty of Science, Niigata University, with prefix NU-F (fusulinids) or NU-B (brachiopods).
