KO2 locality, Shokawa Village, Kobudani Valley (Cretaceous to of Japan)

Also known as Shokawa Village locality 2 (KO-2)

Where: Gifu, Japan (36.1° N, 136.9° E: paleocoordinates 46.8° N, 138.3° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Okurodani Formation (Tetori Group), Late/Upper Hauterivian to Late/Upper Hauterivian (136.4 - 113.0 Ma)

• Itoshiro Subgroup, lowest part of formation; Three levels with fossils within layer: lowemost plant macrofossils, then assorted bones and fish; then dinosaur teeth at top - total thickness 200 mm maximum.

•'KO2 bone-bed horizon'

•The fossiliferous horizon has been provisionally dated in relation to volcaninc tuff layers above the bone bed, for which dates of 120-140 Ma were obtained by fission track dating (Gifu-Ken Dinosaur Research Committee 1993).

•The age of the Okurodani Formation is controversial, Kusuhashi et al. (2006) suggested a Barremian-Aptian age according to tuffaceous mudstone zircons, Nagata et al. (2019) suggested an age of 129.2 ± 0.4 (95% CI) Ma, and Sano and Yabe (2017) proposed an age of Late Hauterivian or younger.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fine channel fill; fine-grained, gray, silty sandstone and mudstone

• possibly "a floodplain environment close to a large river"
• "Alternating beds of fine-grained sandstone, mudstone and coarse-grained sandstone with a tuff bed. The dinosaur teeth were obtained from a muddy fine-grained sandstone bed." "The bone-bed matrix is a dark gray silty-sandstone."

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils

Collected by Shibata, Ohkura, & Shimizu in 1990–1994

Collection methods: surface (float), surface (in situ),

• Repositories: Visitor's Centre of the Board of Education, Shokawa village (SBEG VP); Visitor's Centre of the Izumi Board of Education, Izumi, Fukui Prefecture, Japan (IBEF VP). Collected by Mr Ikoi Shibata, Mr Ohkura, Mr Shimizu
