Schuchert Dal Formation, Jameson Land, East Greenland (Permian of Greenland)

Where: Greenland (72.0° N, 23.0° W: paleocoordinates 28.9° N, 14.5° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• basin-level geographic resolution

When: Oksedal Member (Schuchert Dal Formation), Zechstein (259.0 - 252.3 Ma)

• The locality shows a transition from the upper Oksedal Member of the Schuchert Dal Formation into the base of the overlying Wordie Creek Formation.

Environment/lithology: marine

• The sediments of the Schuchert Dal Formation and the overlying Wordie Creek Formation were deposited in a narrow, elongate, fault controlled basin. A well oxygenated benthic environment.

•A dramatic change in atmospheric chemistry would call upon an episode of massive volcanic activity that could be responsible for excessive emissions of co2 and or acidifying gasas and their derivative liquid aerosols.

• The Greenland P-Tr record is among the most expanded in the world.

•This area is far enough away from later igneous intrusions that it has suffered no thermal alternation, unlike other localities elsewere.

•Oksedal Member of the Schuchert Dal Formation is composed of bioturbated green/grey, micaceous mud-siltstones and contain a diverse trace fossil assemblage that includes Planolites, Palaeophycus and Rhizocorallium) The overlying dark grey, micaceous and pyretic mud-siltstones of the basal Wordie Creek Formation are generally laminated, except for rare horizons containing sparse Planolites.

Collection methods: quarrying, chemical, mechanical,
