Osteno (Jurassic of Italy)

Where: Italy (46.0° N, 9.1° E: paleocoordinates 33.2° N, 15.6° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Lombardische Kieselkalk Formation, Bucklandi (196.5 - 189.6 Ma)

• Lower Sinemurian, bucklandi zone. "Fossil remains are present throughout the whole thickness of the fossiliferous seies... The majority of these have been found between 1964 and 1979, without any precise indication of their position within the stratigraphic sequence"

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lagoonal or restricted shallow subtidal; lithified, pyritic lime mudstone

• "poorly oxygenated sea bottom" with restricted circulation
• "grey spongolithic micrite, 4 m thick... microcrystalline calcite containing granules of pyrite, often altered into haematite, and diffuse limonitic material. The rock abounds in monaxon spicules of sponges and radiolarians, originally siliceous but now totally or partly replaced by calcite... The fossiliferous rock is extremely homogeneous; it is not stratified... No other sedimentary structures are present: there are no traces of cross lamination, grading, current patterns or bioturbation"

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: adpression, soft parts

Collected by G. Pinna in 1964 to 1979
