Zengővárkony forest, NE from the lime kilns (Jurassic of Hungary)

Where: Hungary (46.2° N, 18.5° E: paleocoordinates 29.2° N, 25.7° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Fonyaszo Limestone Formation, Late/Upper Oxfordian (161.2 - 155.7 Ma)

• The section is 1 m thick. On top of the limestone bank is a nodular, unstratified marly red limestone with a very rich but poorly preserved ammonite content (ca. 250 ammonite specimens were collected along with four brachiopods). This bed is 40 cm thick. Dating of the outcrop is based on a rich ammonite fauna: Benetticeras benettii; Trimarginites ex gr. trimarginatus; Orthosphinctes (Orthosphinctes) ex gr. tiziani clearly indicate the Late Oxfordian.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; lithified, nodular, red, argillaceous lime mudstone

• Consequently, we may conclude that the presence of Nucleata bouei and Pygope catulloi in the upper Oxfordian of the Mecsek Mountains indicate relatively deep, low energy waters in a bathyal basin, with very little water movement on the sea floor.
• Nodular, unstratified marly red limestone

Size class: macrofossils
