• The Helmsdale Boulder Beds consists principally of boulder beds produced by the movement on the Helmsdale Fault which formed the northwestern margin of a half-graben. The environmental interpretation of these unusual units is still debated.
• The Boulder Beds are largely composed of Old Red Sandstone clasts.
