Horlick Formation lithofacies 8 (Devonian of Antarctica)

Where: Antarctica (84.8° S, 115.0° W: paleocoordinates 34.6° S, 175.6° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Horlick Formation, Early/Lower Devonian (419.2 - 393.3 Ma)

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; bioturbated sandstone

• The marine lithofacies 1-8 are interpreted as "shallow inner shelf to shoreline, where storms produced a changing pattern of coarse sand bars and finer troughs." Lithofacies 8 interpreted as "steeper parts of subtidal sand bars"
• "Poorly sorted, feldspathic sandstones with indisctinct bedding. Commonly bioturbated, and containing spiriferid brachiopods, large bivalves with bryozoan overgrowths and crinoidal material. Bivalve shells that have silt infills or 'shadows' may indicate burial first in fine sediment, followed by exhumation during storms and incorporation into coarse sand."

Collection methods: Taxa are listed as Present, Abundant, Rare.
