Cardiola docens Community in the Carnic Alps. (Silurian of Austria)

Where: Austria (46.7° N, 13.0° E: paleocoordinates 6.7° S, 19.1° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Monograptus fritschi linearis zone, Ludfordian (425.6 - 423.0 Ma)

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; shelly/skeletal limestone

• "The limestones with cephalopods usually form part of the continuous carbonate sequence (Bohemia, Carnic Alps) or horizons in calcareous shales (Sardinia). Marginal occurrences of the Community are documented in calcareous shales where conditions were still suitable for epibyssates. [Bivalve life modes and population densities described.] [Current-oriented cephalopods mentioned.] [Community] occurred in a relatively shallow water environment influenced by current activity but protected against stronger wave action."
• "Disarticulated shells occur in biodetrital limestones wtih abundant nektobenthic cephalopod shells accumulated and well oriented by surface current activity."

Collection methods: Because of broad geographic distribution of community and its heterogeneity (discussed in text), only those taxa explicitly mentioned as occurring in Carnic Alps (Tables 16.6--Mt. Cellon and 16.7--Mt. Rauchkofel) have been entered. Authors give life modes and abundances for bivalves.
