Torrente Meduna sample 8 (Miocene of Italy)

Also known as Pecten purigalensis community sample 8

Where: Pordenone, Italy (46.2° N, 12.8° E: paleocoordinates 45.5° N, 12.2° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Rugo Mizza Sandstone Formation, Burdigalian (20.4 - 16.0 Ma)

• Miocene Torento-Meduna sequence unconformably overlies the Eocene Clauzetto Flysch (Flysch di Clauzetto) and is composed of Preplans Sandstone, Zouf marl, Rugo Mizza Sandstone, San Martino Calcarenite, Torrente Meduna Siltstone, Maraldi Sandstone, Bier Puddingstone, and Montello Conglomerate. Thickness of the Rugo Mizza Sandsone is approximately 215 m.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; glauconitic, silty marl

• "Microfaunas point towards a Burdigalian age; the glauconitic bed was considered to be of Langhian age by Stefani (1982) [this is not what is illustrated in current reference]"
• Rugo Mizza Sandstone is "composed of fine-grained greyish sandstone, with rare intercalations of silty clay. The upper part consists of silty marl topped by the glauconitic bed."

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: bulk,

• Based on single bulk samples, about 30 cubic centimetres each. Grain size data also provided.

• In enterers opinion the taxonomic list is representative of molluscan taxa, however no non-mollusca taxa are detailed and the reference indicates "Megafauna is concentrated mainly in the upper part and includes bivalves, ahermatypic corals and echinoid fragments; abundant burrows occur as well".
