Also known as USGS 1762, Field #107
Where: Panama (9.2° N, 79.5° W: paleocoordinates 6.7° N, 77.1° W)
• coordinate estimated from map
• outcrop-level geographic resolution
When: Gatuncillo Formation, Late/Upper Eocene (37.2 - 33.9 Ma)
• Marly limestone In Madden basin, the Gatuncillo Formation is overlain by Caimato Formation and overlies Cretaceous basement. The thickness of the foramtion is difficult to estimate, but not more than 300 m. Limestones are extensive. Algal or algal-foraminiferal limestones dominate the upper part of the formation. Other facies include echinoid bearing limestones, soft and coralliferous limestones. Siliciclastic facies dominate the formartion and include fine-grained and sandy strata.
• bed-level stratigraphic resolution
Environment/lithology: lithified limestone
Size class: macrofossils
Reposited in the USNM
Collection methods: quarrying,
• Collected by Thomson (1948) and Thomson and Woodring (1949). Material is also held (but not specified for any specific collection) at Stanford University, Acad. Nat. Sci. Phil., Corenell University, PRI, U. Cal. and Cal. Acad. Sci.
