Agaete 85 masl (Pleistocene of Spain)

Where: Spain (28.1° N, 15.7° W: paleocoordinates 29.0° N, 15.8° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Early/Lower Pleistocene (2.6 - 0.8 Ma)

• The magnetic polarity of the basaltic lava flow directly underlying the marine deposits at Los Llanos de Tumas (Agaete) is normal and has a K/Ar age of 1.80 +-0.03 Ma. The magnetic polarity of the basaltic lava flow overlying the deposits at Cementerio (Agaete) is reversed and the K/Ar age is 1.75 +-0.03 Ma. The two ages agree perfectly with their polarities and correspond to the upper limit of the Olduvai event.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; poorly lithified, calcareous conglomerate

• calcretised fossiliferous conglomerates, rich in algae

Size class: macrofossils
