Androlikou (Pliocene of Cyprus)

Where: Cyprus (35.0° N, 32.4° E: paleocoordinates 35.0° N, 32.2° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Early/Lower Pliocene (5.3 - 3.6 Ma)

• The micropalaeontological study of the two litholo- gies which are exposed at Androlikou, has shown that Globorotalia humerosa and G. margaritae margari- tae occur in the bioarenite, whereas Globorotalia hu- merosa is associated with G. puncticulata in the marly facies. Consequently, the age of the fossiliferous beds is here interpreted as being Early Pliocene.

Environment/lithology: marine; white marl

• This outcrop is a distinct dependence of the Pliocene filling of the former gulf which is presently drained by the Khrysokhou river.
• The fossiliferous outcrop is situated at the top of a thick series of massiv greyish to whitish marls. The main fossiliferous bed, which is intercalated about two metres below a bed of lithified bioarenite, is divided into two parts: a twenty centimetres thick laminated horizon of a whitish marl which is rich in fish skel- etons, underlying a decimetre of bioarenite yield- ing mainly ornamented fragments of Aeoliscus body shields.

Size class: macrofossils
