When: Early/Lower Eocene (55.8 - 48.6 Ma)

Environment/lithology: transition zone or lower shoreface; lag, calcareous tuff

• bedding and textural features indicative of a mid-shelf to upper-bathyal life setting
• a calcareous palagonite tuff of basaltic composition with beds of lapillistone and tuff-breccia

•soft, poorly bedded, bryozoan grainstone and minor echinoid-spine packstone

Size classes: mesofossils, microfossils

• Associated macrofossils include a scleractinian coral, several brachiopods, a gastropod and bivalves.

Collection methods: PREPARATION: Individual bryozoans could be picked out of the limestone whereas bulk collections were collected for later washing, sieving and sorting. Specimens were studied by scanning electron microscopy using a LEO 1455VP SEM at the Natural History Museum, London, UK and a Hitachi TM3000 Tabletop Microscope at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, Wellington, New Zealand.
