Pampa de Jones - dated (Eocene of Argentina)

Where: Neuquén, Argentina (41.0° S, 71.2° W: paleocoordinates 43.5° S, 61.2° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Huitrera Formation, Early/Lower Eocene (55.8 - 48.6 Ma)

• Ar - Ar dating on sanidine and biotite.

•The corresponding microfloras are of Early Eocene age.

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lacustrine deltaic; claystone and siltstone

• Microflora correspond to sediments of the eastern most volcanic arc (of Paleocene to Eocene age) of northwestern extra-andean Patagonia.
• The local strata consist of tuff and mudstone, claystone and siltite interbedded with sandy laters., somewhat more than 8 m thick on a single section line in the center of the outcrop, representing a volcanic lacustrine environment probably located near a lake margin. Most of the macrofossils at the site occur in a blocky, sity mudstone unit of 1 m thickness.

Size class: microfossils

• This fossil site holds macroflora, microflora, insects, and mostly famously, an ontogenic series of pipid frogs.

Preservation: adpression

Collection methods: specimens are in the Museo Palaeontológico (BAR), San Carlos de Bariloche
