Puesto Baibián (Paleogene of Argentina)

Where: Chubut, Argentina (43.0° S, 67.6° W: paleocoordinates 45.5° S, 57.8° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Paleogene (66.0 - 23.0 Ma)

• -The fossil remains were recovered from unnamed beds at the Puesto Baibián locality.

•-For the purposes of this article, we can say that the Baibián Beds are definitely post-Paleocene in age and that they preceded the deposition of the Late Oligocene–Early Miocene Sarmiento Group in the same area.

•-These beds, which we informally name here in as the Baibián Beds, overlie the Late Cretaceous La Colonia Formation and are overlain by altered basaltic lavas of unknown age, which in turn are overimposed by the tuffaceous Sarmiento Group.

Environment/lithology: fluvial; lithified conglomerate

• The Baibián Beds are around 18 m thick and are composed mainly of a lower interval of fluvial/alluvial conglomerates, which suggest a post-Cretaceous reactivation surface, followed by finely laminated fine-grained lacustrine deposits. The latter bear a rich freshwater aquatic biota, including the potamogetonaceous remains described in this article, Equisetum, frogs, turtles, fishes, and a well-preserved microflora with a high abundance of freshwater algal components that mostly records the local plant community.

Size class: macrofossils

• Other common parts: Infructescences

Preservation: cast, mold/impression, adpression, permineralized, original cellulose

Collection methods: Fossils are housed at the Paleobotanical Collection of the Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio, Chubut, Argentina (MPEF Pb 2010–2013, 2408, and 2409, MPEF Palin).
