2180-II-D-18, Bir al Qasr Fmn., Ash Shati area, N. flank of Murzuk Basin (Devonian of Libya)

Where: Libya (27.5° N, 13.8° E: paleocoordinates 53.8° S, 43.2° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Bi'r al Qasr Formation, Eifelian (393.3 - 387.7 Ma)

• Age range of formation is Eifelian to Givetian (ref. 8780). However, the bulk is Eifelian, and the Givetian age applies only to the uppermost beds.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; sandstone and claystone

• "[formation yields] poorly diversified benthic asssemblages with mainly sessile elements...low diversity and degree of fragmentation indicate moderate current activity, in a shallow subtidal BA2 environment"
• Formation in general: "In the typical development, the Formation begins with med-gr. sst, continues w/ silty clayst. b eing interbedded w/ sst., and is finished with sst." [ref. 8780]

•This collection: "quartzose sandstone"
