Kovagoszolos formation boreholes M3-M8 Mescek Mountains Hungary (Permian of Hungary)

Where: Hungary (46.1° N, 18.1° E: paleocoordinates 7.9° S, 30.8° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Kovagoszolos Formation, Permian (298.9 - 251.9 Ma)

• The sequence of the Kovagoszolos formation consists of a rhythmic alternation of coarser and finer grained beds, beginning with conglomerates. Its middle part consists of relatively finer grained sandstone beds. Higer up the profile grains become coarser again and the upper part ends with a pebbled sandstone. Lower Varied Sandstone member, middle Gray Sandstone member, and upper Red Sandstone member.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fluvial; gray, green sandstone

• In the south side of the mountains varied, coarse grained sandy beds occur in the upper part of the boda Aleurolite Formation, passing over to the concordantly layered, variegated clastica of the Kovagoszolos Formation through progressive coarsening of the grains. The Jakabhegy Sandstone formation overlaps the Kovagoszolos Formation with a low angle disconformaty. The Kovagoszolos formation represents one cycle, within four medium-sized cycles, however, eighteen small cyscles can be proved by means of statistical grain analysis of the sandstone.
• Its middle part consists of relatively finer grained sandstone beds.
