Barrio Allende (Permian of Mexico)

When: Paso Hondo Formation, Kungurian (279.3 - 272.3 Ma)

• The Barrio Allende section records 6.40 m of the Paso Hondo Formation, and is composed of 21 well-defined horizontal calcareous strata. Brachiopods occur in 1.7 m package of light gray limestone with intercalations of fine layers of orange or light brown calcarenite. Presence of Perrinites hilli indicates Kungurian age.

Environment/lithology: shallow subtidal; lithified lime mudstone and lithified, calcareous sandstone

• All specimens were sampled in calcareous or calcareous-sandy rocks that outcrop in the Barrio Allende section, where facies are characterized by mudstone of homogeneous micrite without skeletal grains. Facies of the fossil-bearing rocks, the state of preservation of specimens and the biotic association, allowed relating the Barrio Allende section with an inner marine platform with shallow waters of restricted circulation, characterized by good lighting and an abundant supply of sand, and low proportions of silt and clay and a high percentage of carbonate.
