?Camelford Limestone, The Gap Area (Silurian of Australia)

Where: New South Wales, Australia (34.0° S, 148.8° E: paleocoordinates 1.5° S, 175.2° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Camelford Formation, Pridoli (423.0 - 419.2 Ma)

• Brachiopods suggest Pridoli age, as does some of the conodont data. Age coincides with that of Camelford Limestone near Wellington, based on conodonts found in that formation.

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; gray grainstone

• See lithology.
• "Massive limestones contrasting in lithologies and faunas with the Garra outcrop E of the Eurimbla Fault. The lower part of this unit consists of coarse crinoidal calcarenites with interbeds of limestone conglomerates. The remainder of the unit is dominated by massive limestone conglomerates with a distinctive reddish or pinkish dolomitic matrix, although grey colourations are also present. Subordinate lithologies with the upper part of the formation include massive dove-grey to dark grey calcisiltites and calcilutites as well as what may be non-carbonate unites...Limestones near the base of the formation include silicified stromatoporoids [etc.]"

Size class: microfossils

Preservation: replaced with silica
