Tufolitas Laguna del Hunco (Eocene of Argentina)

Where: Chubut, Argentina (42.5° S, 70.0° W: paleocoordinates 45.0° S, 60.0° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Early/Lower Eocene (55.8 - 48.6 Ma)

• middle Chubut River volcanic-pyroclastic complex.

•According to Carvalho et al. 2013:

•40Ar/39Ar analyses of single sanidine crystals from a volcanic ash bed located within the densely sampled portion of the section yielded an early Eocene age of 52.2 +- 0.22 Ma, further supported by the detection of two paleomagnetic reversals, and two other, low resolution Ar/Ar ages from the same section for the most recent synopsis, see Wilf et al., 2003, 2005; Wilf, 2012). From the combined evidence, 52.2 Ma is the best available working age for the entire flora.

Environment/lithology: crater lake; lithified tuff

• tuffaceous caldera-lake deposits

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: adpression

Collection methods: Studied material comes from collections at the Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio, Chubut, Argentina (MPEF-Pb); National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, USA (USNM); Museo de Ciencias Naturales de La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina (LPPb); Fundación Miguel Lillo, Tucumán, Argentina (LilPb), and Departamento de Ecología, Genética y Evolución, Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina (FCENCBPB).
