Protathyris-Lanceomyonia Comm., Putonggou Fm., Diebu Co., Gansu Prov. (Devonian of China)

Where: Gansu, China (37.0° N, 103.0° E: paleocoordinates 30.3° S, 103.6° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Middle Member (Putonggou Formation), Lochkovian (419.2 - 410.8 Ma)

• "The Middle Member of the P. Fm. occurs above the Icriodus woschmidti-bearing Lower Member, and below the Spirigerina fauna-bearing Upper Member. This suggests that the Middle Member is of Late Gedinnian age."

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; calcareous shale and reef rocks

• "...consists of calcareous shale, reefy limestone, and dolomitic limestone. The fossils occur as articulated individuals. Elsewhere in this Member there are additional low-diversity, high-dominance associations (including Protocortezorthis, Linguopugnoides, Schizophoria, and "Stropheodonta", as well as a few other associations including Protathyris, Linguopugnoides, and Howellella). The shells commonly occur in masses...The overall aspect suggests relatively shallow water, possibly BA 2 or shallow BA 3 within the quiet water category..."
