Howellella angustiplicata-Fistulacanta numerosa Comm.,SW Byelorussia (Devonian of Belarus)

Where: Belarus (52.0° N, 24.0° E: paleocoordinates 17.2° S, 6.6° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Lochkovian (419.2 - 410.8 Ma)

• Lochkov analog of the Podolian Borstchov stage. In the Tomashovka 11 Borehole the Pridolian-Lochkov boundary is at 491.5 m [i.e. right below this community]. The community described here occurs in the top of the Tomashova Formation and in the Domachevo and Dubits Formations.

Environment/lithology: marine; gray, green, argillaceous marl and shelly/skeletal grainstone

• "Because framestone layers [in Domachevo Fm.] consisting mainly of large zoaria of Fistulacanta numerosa alternate with thin, curved layers of detrital marl...these rocks are interpreted as part of a bryozoan bioherm encompassed by bryozoan and crinoid overgrowth. [Rocks in middle of Bortschov Stage in Tomashovka 11 Borehole] apparently formed in shallow-water 'meadows' with an active hydrodynamic regine in the BA 2 position. These 'meadows' possibly represent dense settlements of crinoids overgrown by bryozoan zoaria in an association with overgrown firls of blue-green algae."
• "Occuurs in dark, greenish gray argillitic marls with subordinate, biogenic limestone....In the base of the Domachevo Formation a bryozoan bioherm represented by framestones with curved layers of detrital marls is developed...Two layers of massive bryozoan-algae-crinoid packstones and grainstones are established in the Tomshovka 11 Borehole in the middle part of the Borstchov Stage..."

Collection methods: core

• Abundances given for dominant brachiopods and bryozoans.
