Brachiopods of the Los Espejos Formation, Lochkovian Part (Devonian of Argentina)

Where: Argentina (30.3° S, 68.8° W: paleocoordinates 52.5° S, 123.8° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Los Espejos Formation, Lochkovian (419.2 - 410.8 Ma)

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; bioturbated siltstone and bioturbated mudstone

• Precordillera. See PBDB Collections 25053-58 for paleoenvironmental discussion. "Deposition of the facies is interpreted as having occurred from suspension, in a low-energy environment, without significant wave or current activity...represesnting an interval of depositional starvation, followed by aggradational deposition."
• From Sanchez et al. 1991 (PBDB ref. 7023): "Reddish bioturbated siltstones 12-15 m. thick...at the top of Los Espejos Formation. The contact with the underlying Facies B2 is marked by an abrupt change in color for yellowish to reddish violet and by the presence of three laterally continuous horizons of light brown siltstones, 5 to 10 cm thick, containing randomly oriented brachiopod shells. Reddish-violet mudstones interbedded among the siltstone beds are extensively bioturbated. They contain scattered articulated shells of brachiopods and solitary and colonial corals. The uppermost 10 m...are composed of a homogeneous and completely bioturbated sequence of reddish mudstones. Fossils have not been found in these beds."
