Unspecified localities [Tamiami Formation] (Pliocene of the United States)

Where: Florida (26.1° N, 81.5° W: paleocoordinates 26.2° N, 80.7° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• basin-level geographic resolution

When: Tamiami Formation, Early/Lower Pliocene (5.3 - 3.6 Ma)

• LITHOSTRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONSHIPS: From the Tamiami Formation, which unconformably underlies the Pinecrest Beds (=Pincrest Fm), and is correlative to the Choctawatchee Fm (=Jackson Bluff Fm) in Northern Florida and Yorktown Fm of North Carolina and Virginia. AGE: Early Pliocene-Late Pliocene according to Oyen and Portell, but assigned here to an Early Pliocene age. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From unknown position within formation.

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lithified, phosphatic, shelly/skeletal, gray, calcareous sandstone and lithified, phosphatic, gray, green, sandy, calcareous claystone

• ENVIRONMENT: Shallow carbonate setting, probably firmground, based on high epifaunal content.
• GENERAL LITHOLOGY: Includes light gray to tan fossiliferous sands, light gray to green fossiliferous sandy clays and clayey sands, and white to light gray, poorly consolidated, sandy, fossiliferous limestone (pictured below). Phosphate is present in virtually all lithologies as limited quantities of sand- to gravel-sized grains.

Size classes: macrofossils, microfossils

Preservation: cast, mold/impression, original calcite

Reposited in the USNM

• COLLECTORS: Multiple collectors, probably including Mansfield, A. Olsson, and R. Petit. REPOSITORY: USNM.
