Pui, Barbat River (Cretaceous of Romania)

Also known as Pui 1983; Bărbat River

Where: Hunedoara, Romania (45.5° N, 23.1° E: paleocoordinates 37.9° N, 19.8° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Sînpetru Formation, Early/Lower Maastrichtian (70.6 - 66.0 Ma)

• Customarily referred to the Sînpetru Formation, but it could represent a distinct stratigraphic unit, informally dubbed the ‘Bărbat Formation’ (see Csiki-Sava et al. 2016)

•Most of the Pui localities are from the middle-upper part of the Bărbat River succession and are likely to be latest early to early late Maastrichtian (see Csiki-Sava et al. 2016)

•Ţabără and Slimani, 2019: The Sînpetru Formation was first assigned to the upper Maastrichtian on the basis of the presence of the pollen Pseudopapilopollis praesubhercynicus (see Antonescu et al., 1983). This assignment was later questioned by Van Itterbeeck et al. (2005), who suggested a lower/upper Maastrichtian boundary interval. Palaeomagnetic studies indicate that the Sînpetru Formation was laid down between the beginning of Chron 32n.1 and the end of Chron 31n (68.7–71.5 Ma) (Panaiotu and Panaiotu, 2010). The age of this formation is more difficult to establish due to its low content in palynomorphs and long-ranging taxa such as Deltoidospora minor, Gleicheniidites senonicus and Laevigatosporites ovatus. All taxa identified by us from the Sînpetru Formation were also previously recorded from the same deposits by Van Itterbeeck et al. (2005) and Csiki et al. (2008). Therefore, we agree the early/late Maastrichtian age of this formation, as suggested by Van Itterbeeck et al. (2005) on the basis of a more conclusive palynological content.
